The town of Minocqua is in Oneida County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,859 at the time of the 2000 census. A large number of seasonal residents live in the town during the summer. It is a major tourist attraction during the summer for water sports and fishing.
Minocqua was officially organized on March 13, 1889. Minocqua's Ojibwe name means "fair maiden." Minocqua is also said to be derived from the Ojibwe word Ninocqua, meaning noon day rest. The town might also be named after a tribal chief named Noc Wib or Minocquip. Another explanation for the name may refer to the fact that the town is an island surrounded by several lakes (aqua). Residents call Minocqua the "Island City".
In 1891 the town consisted of 29 saloons, two hotels, two general stores, a small market and about 15 homes. In 1912, a fire destroyed most of the buildings along Front Street.
